It seems Kenyan roads are back to their deadly state with three accidents claiming 13 lives in one day
10 passengers perished and several others sustained injuries when the matatu they were travelling in overturned at Mitheru market along Chogoria-Chuka highway Sunday morning.
Meru South acting Police Commandant Mr. Caleb Matoke said initial investigations shows that the vehicle rolled following a tyre burst but added that comprehensive investigations would be carried out to ascertain the actual cause of the accident.
He added that bodies of the accident victims were removed to Chuka District Hospital Mortuary while the survivors were rushed to Chuka District and Chogoria Mission Hospitals.
Eye witnesses said that the matatu was carrying 22 passengers and it was headed to Chuka town from Mitheru market.
The Meru South Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization Branch chairperson Ms. Ann Njue immediately sent a message of condolence to the families and friends who lost their beloved ones in the accident.
She called on the police to crack down on all unroadworthy vehicles to control such accidents in future.
Elsewhere, a motorcyclist and his two passengers died on the spot early Sunday morning when a speeding bus bound for Mombasa ran them over in Mariakani Township along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
Coast provincial traffic commandant Joshua Omkata who confirmed the incident said traffic investigators were still trying to piece together what caused the 4a.m. grisly road accident.
Mr.Omkata said the motorcycle crash victims were taken to the coast provincial general hospital mortuary.
The traffic boss said the bus and the mangled boda boda were moved to the Mariakani vehicle inspection unit to determine the cause of the crash.
And fourteen passengers travelling from a dowry ceremony escaped death by a whisker after a vehicle they were traveling in rolled along the Kutus-Embu road.
One person was however critically injured after the matatu ferrying family members landed into a ditch Saturday night, a few meters away from the Kutus Bridge.
Kirinyaga North OCPD Patrick Oduma said the driver and the conductor of the ill fated matatu fled from the accident scene immediately noting that the mishap was out of negligence.
He said four passengers were treated and discharged at the Kerugoya district hospital but a lady who had injuries on the head was still in critical condition.
Oduma said the victims had gone to Mwea for a social ceremony and were returning to Kerugoya Town when the accident occurred.
The police boss said they were looking for the driver and the conductor of the matatu and would be charged with careless driving.
