President Mwai Kibaki on Sunday left for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for a meeting expected to make a breakthrough in the Sudan peace process.
Top on the Inter Governmental Agency on Development (Igad) summit agenda is the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in Sudan.
President Omar Al-Bashir of the Republic of Sudan and the First Vice President Salva Kiir Myardit are scheduled to attend the meeting.
Key among the pending issues under the CPA include demarcation of the common boundary and the dispute on the oil-rich Abyei.
South Sudan will be declared an independent state on July 9.
Both President Al-Bashir and Salva Kiir, as CPA partners, have expressed commitment to resolve issues on resource sharing, disputed border areas and citizenship, which are crucial to the future of the relationship between Sudan and South Sudan as independent states.
The meeting will also focus on the prevailing political and security situation in Somalia and Eritrea’s activities in the region.
