Nine Permanent Secretaries have joined Education PS Prof James ole Kiyiapi in seeking political seats in next year’s general election.
The PSs are said to be eying the lucrative county governor positions and have already put in place campaign strategies. Sources indicate that the officers have been holding meetings and hosting delegations in both their city and rural homes.

They are Internal Security PS Francis Kimemia, Kenneth Lusaka (Livestock), Tirop Kosgey (Housing), Michael Kamau (Roads), Andrew Mondoh (Special Programmes), John Lonyangapuo (Works), Beatrice Kituyi (Labour), Bitange Ndemo (Information) and Emmanuel Kisombe (Immigration).

The PSs are said to be under pressure from their counties to announce their candidature like Kiyiapi who has declared his intentions to run for the presidency. Immigration’s Kisombe has already declared interest in the Taita Taveta county governorship. He became the first PS to announce his intentions saying he had served the nation as a PS and now wants to serve his local people as their governor.

Livestock PS Lusaka and Housing’s Tirop told the Star they are weighing their options before throwing themselves into the race for Bungoma and Uasin Gishu counties respectively. The two said they are currently concentrating on their public service jobs. “I am still the PS having been appointed by the president but should my term expire or be dropped by the president and my people ask me to serve them, then I will heed their call,” Lusaka said.

The Livestock PS who was initially thought to be eying the Kimilili parliamentary seat is said to be slowly shifting his focus to the Bungoma county governorship.

On his part, Tirop said he was keenly observing the political developments before announcing his intentions. “Yes I have received a delegation requesting me to vie for the post but I can’t make a decision yet,” he said. PS Kimemia who hails from Ol Kalou is said to be eying the Nyandarua governorship while Roads’ Kamau is eying President Kibaki’s Nyeri county.

Mondo is set to contest for the Busia governor seat while it is not clear which county Kituyi, who hails from Trans Nzoia will contest in.
