Chicago Bulls superstar Luol Deng is in Kenya. We are yet to establish why he is in the country but we figure he is Sudan bound to join his countrymen in celebrating the independence of South Sudan on July 9‎.
He has been around Nairobi and tweeted a picture of himself at the newly opened Galleria shopping mall in Nairobi and later with Kenyan events organizer Buddha Blaze at the Mercury Lounge.
Deng was born in Wau, Sudan and is a member of the Dinka ethnic group and left the country as a child when his father Aldo, a member of the Sudanese parliament, moved the family to Egypt to escape the Second Sudanese Civil War. They were granted political asylum and emigrated to Brixton, South London.
Deng joined the NBA in 2004 and was picked seventh overall by the Phoenix Suns, but was immediately traded to the Chicago Bulls.
In 2008, Deng agreed to a six-year deal with the Bulls worth a guaranteed US$71 million. With incentives he could get up to US$80 million.
He has been noted for his work on behalf of the 'Lost Boys of Sudan' and other refugees.
