Dr Willy Mutunga is sworn in as the new Chief Justice at State House, Nairobi on June 20, 2011. Looking on is High Court Registrar Lydia Achode (left).I watched in awe as Dr. Willy Mutunga and Lady Justice Nancy Baraza took the oath of office as
Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice respectively.
The swearing in of a former political detainee and a pro-democracy activist is proof that the struggle for liberation is not an event but a process. We have come a long way to this point in our country.
Having experienced firsthand the pain and suffering in the struggle for democracy in this country, I identify with the experiences of Dr. Willy Mutunga’s family as political detention had a huge impact on family members.
To the spouses and family members of former political detainees I say to you, Aluta continua! Our suffering and perseverance was not in vain.
To my fellow Kenyans, we must remain resilient to liberate our country from impunity and anti-reform forces.
The Judiciary has previously been associated with corruption and impunity; today marks the beginning of a new dawn in our country.
I urge the new office bearers, Hon. Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga and his deputy Lady Justice Nancy Baraza to see to it that all Kenyans find justice in our Judicial Mechanisms.
God bless you and God bless Kenya.
Signed,
Ida B. Odinga MGH
