HEARING on the extradition case against businessman Yagnesh Devani is set to begin at the Majesty’s Court in London next month. Attorney General Amos Wako yesterday told Parliament that Devani has been conditionally released by the UK police pending the hearing of the extradition case.
Wako said Devani who is wanted in Kenya over the Sh7.6 billion Triton Oil scandal paid a cash bail of Sh17,520,000.
The AG said police in London have seized Devani’s passport to stop him from fleeing, in addition to other conditions requiring him to remain at an address known to them every day between 10am and 4pm. “We have been informed by the authorities in Britain that the curfew on Devani is to be monitored electronically,” Wako said.

The AG was responding to a question by Yatta MP Charles Kilonzo who wanted to know why the government has not been able to secure the extradition of Bishop Gilbert Deya and Yagnesh Devani. Wako said the government is waiting for the British Secretary for Home Affairs to give orders on the extradition of Deya. “In performing his judicial functions we expect the minister to make a ruling on this matter soon,” he said.
The MPs further sought to know the number of arrest warrants from Kenya which had been issued to Interpol for action. “The habit of those who steal has been that you steal and go to Europe. What is the government doing to ensure those on the run are apprehended,” Kilonzo posed.
Juja MP William Kabogo sought to know the number of people the government has been able to bring back to Kenya.
