Cutting Edge

SHAMELESS GIRLS. Residents of apartments in Kolobot and Munae roads in Parklands, Nairobi, are up in arms over shameless twilight girls who have invaded the area. Anjushree Merali says they quarrel among themselves all night, disturbing the peace. The residents are appealing to Town Clerk Philip Kisia and Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere to help rid the area of these women. “We need to bring up our children in a quiet and decent environment,” says Anjushree. Her contact is anjushree@hotmail.co.uk

OVER-PROTECTIVE PARENTS. University lecturer X.N. Iraki says some students are baby-sat by their parents, who will take them to campus on reporting day and occasionally check on them, “a carryover from the high school visiting days”. The parents will apply for post-graduate courses for their children and even arrange their weddings. “Don’t they ever realise you make a better swimmer if you start from the deep end? Though the students’ work ethic worries me, there are some responsible ones.”

GARBAGE PIT. Nairobi has been turned into a garbage pit, says Edwin Nduati. On Enterprise, Likoni and Lunga Lunga roads, there are piles of uncollected garbage. “Don’t property owners and workers in these areas pay rates and other charges? To add insult to injury, there is wanton felling of trees on Uhuru Highway, especially at the Bunyala and Haile Selassie Avenue roundabouts, to clear the way for billboards. “Do they want to turn our city into a concrete and billboards jungle? His contact is nduati@yahoo.com

FOUL BREATH. Baya Kazungu says he has noted with consternation that many people these days have foul breath and wonders what could be the cause? “Is it the food we eat or is it simply a question of not observing basic hygiene such as brushing our teeth more often? It is very uncomfortable to engage in a discussion with people suffering from acute foul breath. And the real agony is that it is also impolite to tell them so!” says Baya, who welcomes a discussion through safari_anthony@yahoo.com.au

SLEEPING ON THE JOB. The area behind the bus stop on Magadi Road next to the Nairobi National Park fence and opposite the new Galleria shopping centre has been literally turned into a toilet by matatu touts, with a horrible stench engulfing the area, moans Samuel Akhwale. This, he adds, has gone on for a while. “I don’t know who between the city council, Nema, Kenya Wildlife Service and Ministry of Public Health is sleeping on the job. Needed is an ‘IKO’ toilet just like the one at Langata Cemetery.”
Have a decent day, won’t you!
