6 injured in latest Nairobi building collapse

null 1/1 NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 19 –Six people escaped death narrowly when a building under construction collapsed in Nairobi’s Lang’ata estate. This comes barely a week after four people perished when a six storey building, also under construction, collapsed in Nairobi’s Embakasi estate. “We were constructing the fourth storey when I felt the building shake and a few seconds later it collapsed,” narrates Julius Mutunga, one of the construction workers at the site. Mr Mutunga survived the Sunday incident unscathed apart from a headache and pain on the right leg. “We started constructing in September last year and now we were on the fourth floor. I think the weight is what made it collapse,” he said. Kennedy Ciira another survivor said he will not go back to construction work. “I still don’t understand how it collapsed. I have seen death with my own eyes but luckily there is no one who was trapped,” he said. Mr Ciira said that they had reported to work at about 8am and were due to leave at 1pm. However the building collapsed at 11.30am. “We don’t normally come to work on Sunday but we had come to finish up some things that needed to be done,” he explains. “It was a restaurant. The ground floor was to be a hotel, first floor a pub and the rest were to be lodgings,” he went on to say. They were all rushed to the Nairobi West hospital for treatment by the owner of the building. Nairobi Deputy Provincial Police chief Moses Nyakwama said two of the workers sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the hospital. “We don’t know yet the cause of the collapse. It requires a technical person to come and give that report during the investigations. If there is any offence committed by anyone, then appropriate action is going to be taken,” he said.
