VP Kalonzo hits out at Ruto over Mutunga

Share/Save/Bookmark Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka criticised Eldoret North MP William Ruto and his allies for opposing the nomination of Willy Mutunga as Chief Justice.
Kalonzo said Mutunga’s track record is proven and his nomination shows the international community that Kenya is ready to set up a local tribunal and try the post-election violence suspects.
Ruto and his allies have opposed Mutunga’s nomination and vowed to rally MPs to reject the nomination in Parliament. Kalonzo said Mutunga should not be rejected just because of his stud. “We should not look for the little specs in other people’s eyes and forget about our on logs. No one is an angel. We should support him regardless of political parties, religion or any other basis apart from competence and track record,” said Kalonzo.
Speaking after attending a church service at the new JCC cathedral in Mombasa, the VP showered Mutunga with praise saying he has been in the forefront in championing for the rule of law and justice.
Kalonzo said the rot in the Judiciary cannot be dealt with by a person in the system. Independence of the Judiciary is a critical factor in a country and Kenya is not any different, he said. “I have known him for long because he taught me commercial law in the University. He stood for justice and integrity in the legal profession. I cannot think of a better person to deal with the rot in our Judiciary,” Kalonzo said.
He said the appointment of Mutunga will justify Kenya’s call to set up a local tribunal to try the Ocampo Six and other post-election violence suspects. “His appointment will earn praise for Kenya and show the international community that we are committed to reforms in all sectors, especially in the judiciary,” he said.
