Garsen MP Danson Mungatana (Sh647,703), Webuye MP Alfred Wekesa Sambu (Sh2,263,672), former State House Comptroller Matere Keriri (Sh816,382), embattled Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission chairman Bethuel Kiplagat (Sh1.1 million) and politician Orie Rogo Manduli (Sh2,531,800) risk losing their prime assets.
However, Mr Kiplagat told the Nation Thursday: “I think it is a computer mistake. I don’t owe them any money. I have paid all my rates, I only have one property in the city.”
Other defaulters put on notice are former Mbooni MP Joseph Munyao (Sh949,080), Ms Stella Kilonzo, the estate of former Cabinet minister Kipng’eno arap Ng’eny, Mr Evans Mwaniki and one M. Mariga.
They are among property owners whose 112 parcels of land could be sold by the council to recover the money.
Town clerk Philip Kisia warned in an advertisement in the Nation that the council had begun the process of auctioning the listed properties and asked those affected to respond within 10 days.
The property owners will be required to submit proof of payment to the council.
Also named are multinational companies such as the Standard Chartered Bank, which is accused of not paying Sh1.67 million, Kenya Breweries (Sh1.7 million) the defunct Kenya Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (Sh14.67 million) and Stanbic Bank (Sh1.65 million).
Two farmers’ cooperative societies also stand to lose their land if they do not pay up.
Marurui Farmers Company Limited is listed as owner of nine blocks of land, for which it has not paid rates of more than Sh1 million. Drumvale Farmers Cooperative Society could also lose 13 blocks of land over Sh4.5 million in rate arrears.
