Victims of chaos tell Ocampo to keep off

By Karanja Njoroge and Peter AtsiayaInternally displaced persons have said they support deferral of the Kenya cases at the International Criminal Court (ICC) to pave way for a local tribunal.
More than 200 IDP leaders from 74 camps who met in Nakuru yesterday urged the United Nations to grant Kenya’s request to have the cases against the ‘Ocampo Six’ deferred.
They accused ICC Prosecutor Louis Moreno-Ocampo of politicising the process and failing to include leaders believed to have played a key role in the violence.
"We stand for a home grown judicial system and we are opposed to the ICC process as it will never deliver justice, peace nor reconciliation," IDPs leaders from Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Marakwet and Uasin Gishu said.
Through their spokesman Samuel Mbugua, they said as victims of the violence they are concerned that the ICC process will reverse the healing process.
"As the people most affected by the violence we are doing everything possible to forgive and reconcile with our neighbours," said Mbugua.
They accused Moreno-Ocampo of ‘insulting them’ by including in his list leaders who came to their aid during the violence.
The IDPs claimed some non- governmental organisations were using the ICC to solicit funds from donors.
Meanwhile, the National Council of Non Governmental Organisations has faulted China for opposing the International Criminal Court trials.
Chairman Ken Wafula said China’s support for deferral of Kenyan case at The Hague was a betrayal to Kenyans.
"China who are some of the greatest beneficiaries of business ventures in Kenya have betrayed tax payers by going against their wish on the ICC issue," said Wafula.
Speaking to The Standard on Saturday phone yesterday Wafula said majority of Kenyans wanted the suspects of post-election violence tried at The Hague.
