Medical Services minister Anyang’ Nyong’o resumed duty on Monday with calls for universal health insurance.
Prof Nyong’o, who has been away for almost two months on sick leave, reiterated that a global medical health cover was the only way to guarantee Kenyans quality medical care.
The minister returned on Saturday from the US where he was being treated for prostate cancer.
“I have fully recovered and would like to thank God, medics and Kenyans for praying for my quick recovery,” he said on Monday at his Afya House office.
Prof Nyong’o was escorted to his office by Cabinet ministers Beth Mugo (Public Health) and Dalmas Otieno (Public Service). Assistant ministers James Gesami and Samuel Kambi were also present.
Mrs Mugo tickled the crowd when she said: “He looks much younger and handsome after undergoing treatment.”
“The way he has openly talked about his illness and treatment serves as a wake-up call for all of us,” she added.
Mrs Mugo said the ministry was planning a countrywide cancer campaign, focusing on screening for breast, cervical and prostate cancers which are on the rise. She urged the Treasury to increase health funding to at least 15 per cent of the Budget.
Mr Otieno challenged ministers to enhance service delivery.
“It is a shame ministers and senior civil servants seek treatment in South Africa, Israel and US among other countries when they fall ill. This is a clear indictment that management of our hospitals is not keeping pace with the rest of the world.”
Mr Otieno urged men to seek early treatment for prostate cancer.
“Prof Nyong’o has demonstrated courage by showing us prostate cancer can be cured when those afflicted seek early treatment,” he said.
