Nairobi University students protest over death of colleague

By James Ratemo and Cyrus OmbatiUniversity of Nairobi Engineering students on Wednesday demonstrated and vandalised a club in  Nairobi's Westlands, where their colleague had earlier been battered and later died.
The students looted shops and pelted  motorists with stones as they made a grand march starting from Chiromo road, onto Waiyaki way and finally to the club in Westlands.
They also pelted the club with stones, shattering the glass windows and other movables before they lit a bornfire outside the premises.
They demanded to speak to the club manager who had reportedly sneaked away after he got wind of the rioting.
Overpowered, anti-riot police  watched from a distance as the over 800 students vented their anger.
The police had escorted the students in what was supoposed to be a peaceful demonstration.
The students later poured onto Waiyaki way as they made their way back to the university.
The ill-fated student, Dennis Omondi Adari, was assaulted over a week ago when he differed with guards and bouncers at the  night club. Reportedly two guards beat him unconscious after he tried to gain entry through a window into the club after bouncers denied him entry.
He died six days later while undergoing treatment in hospital.
On Wednesday there were reports of looting and stoning of motorists as the angry crowd of students wailed towards the club named 'PSYS' in the heart of Westlands.
Business came to a standstill as business people feared for their lives and looting.

  1. this is not fair. the university students are becoming notorious, they should at least solve issues without fighting. is it a must that in kenya people have to demand for justice with violence?

  2. I am a 70 yrs. old lady going home at 1PM when I was attacked by these hooligans. They hurled stones at me breaking my car windows and the rocks they threw at me narrowly missed my head but not the back of my neck. I had nothing to do with the death of their fellow student so why try to hurt me? At my age I still work hard and pay taxes which educates these chaps yet I was one of the innocent people who was viciously attacked. Are these really the educated people and the future of tomorrow? Doubt it.
