NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 24 - It is my joy to send this message of goodwill and warm greetings to all Kenyans during this Christmas season.

This is a season of great rejoicing in which Christians all over the world commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is an important season in which Christians celebrate the coming of God into the world in the form of man to atone for the sins of humanity.

Therefore, as much as the Christmas season is a period of joy, it is also a time for reflection and renewal of conviction. During this season, we as Christians are expected to re-examine our commitment to the Christian faith and re-dedicate ourselves to a new and fresh relationship with God through Christ.

I urge Kenyans to also remember that the spirit of the Christmas season is that of peace, love and goodwill. As we reflect upon our relationship with God, therefore, let us demonstrate the Christian values of forgiveness, reconciliation, kindness and service. We should strive to forgive those who have wronged us and move forward in the love of God as individuals and as a nation.

As Christians, let us make an effort to help the less fortunate among us. Indeed, an old age tradition associated with this season is that of sharing gifts, smiles, warmth and spreading cheer. Let us extend a helping hand, no matter how small, for this will bring joy and make Christmas brighter for the disadvantaged members of our society.

I also call upon the police to provide adequate security in all parts of the country so that Kenyans can celebrate in a secure and peaceful atmosphere. Similarly, I urge drivers to observe traffic regulations in order to ensure road safety during this season.

Equally important, I wish to note that we have a new law in place meant to regulate the sale and consumption of alcohol. The Alcohol Drinks Control Act, 2010 is being enforced at a time when there is a lot of merrymaking associated with the festive season. I direct the Police to ensure full compliance to the law.

I also wish to urge Kenyans to refrain from overindulgence of alcohol and allow the true spirit of Christmas to be reborn not only in their hearts, but also in their homes as well.

I wish all Kenyans a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year 2011.

Mwai Kibaki, CGH, M.P.

PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBIC OF KENYA
