I did not influence ICC list, Raila says

By PETER OPIYO
Prime Minister Raila Odinga has discounted claims he is behind the naming of six suspects linked to the post-election violence.
The Prime Minister spoke as he called on the suspects to stop panicking, saying there was still a possibility of local trials under a well-established judicial system.
"Watu wengine wanaenda wakitembea wakisema mimi ndio niliweka majina yao kwa listi ya Ocampo. Raila ako na nguvu gani ya kufanya hivo. Mimi sina uwezo. (Some politicians have been going round saying I influenced ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo’s list. How is that possible, I don’t have the powers to do so)," he said, while addressing a gathering in Kiambu.
Raila said if Kenya establishes a special tribunal that meets international standards, then it was possible to ask ICC to allow the suspects to be tried locally.
But Lands Minister James Orengo said attempts to put up a local judicial mechanism has come too late.
"If we want to stop Ocampo, we must fix our Judiciary, but this has come too late because when we wanted a local tribunal, some MPs were saying we go to The Hague," said Orengo.
Raila, who handed over a house he helped construct for the family of the late freedom fighter, Kihara Young, in Githunguri, however, said justice must be done to both the suspects and the victims of the violence. He said impunity must end if stability of the country is to be maintained.
