Rift Won't Give Up Land, Says Moi Son

15 August 2010

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nairobi — Rift Valley landowners will not surrender their ancestral land, Kanu vice-chairman Gideon Moi said at the weekend.

Mr Moi claimed that the creation of county governments under the new Constitution, particularly in the region, was meant to deprive the residents of some parts of the province and confine them to one region with a view to accommodating non-indigenous communities.

Nakuru Town, he said, had been the province's headquarters for many years but with the new arrangement, the Kalenjin community was being confined to Eldoret to pave the way for a certain community to claim ownership through governance.

What is rightfully ours

"It is with this in mind that we campaigned against the document during the referendum because we are not ready to lose what is rightfully ours in the region to anybody," he noted. The former Baringo Central MP was speaking at Silibwet grounds in Bomet District during a thanksgiving meeting for 'No' campaigners in the recent referendum.

Kanu secretary-general Nick Salat, former Mt Elgon MP Joseph Kimkung' and civic leaders from the area were in attendance.
