Police lob tear gas at elderly women

Police officers lobbed tear gas canisters at elderly women who were protesting in Gatundu, Thika district on Saturday.

The elderly women who are shareholders of the multi billion shillings Nyakinyua Company were demonstrating over what they claim is misappropriation of funds by the company's directors.

In a show of might, police armed in combat gear engaged the elderly women who were forced to scamper for safety after the security officers lobbed tear gas canisters at them.

The meeting had been convened to discuss the way forward on the companies investments with the grannies claiming the company's management had misused their funds.

The women who were beneficiaries of large tracts of land allocated to them during the Kenyatta regime, have over the years seen their investment grow into billions of shillings.

They say they have lost property estimated at 2.8 billion shillings including 10 tractors and several lorries, which have gone missing under the watch of the current directors.

They are now appealing to the government to come to their aid and ensure their property is protected.
