Muslims up in arms over arrest of bomb suspects

The Muslim community is calling on the government to intervene and assist three Kenyans handed over to the Ugandan authorities over suspected involvement in the Kampala bombings.

The leaders on Wednesday condemned what they termed as persistence harassment of its faithful by security agents over suspected involvement in terrorist activities.

Addressing a press conference in Nairobi, Jamia Mosque Committee Vice Chairman, Al Amin Kimathi said that the anti-terrorism police unit should not have handed over the Kenyans to Uganda until proper investigations were carried out to prove their involvement in the bombings.

The three Kenyans were arrested two weeks ago and handed over to Ugandan authorities on suspicions of having been involved in the bombings which killed over 70 people and left scores injured last month.

The Muslim leaders called on the government to uphold the rule of the law while criticizing the manner in which the police handled the matter.

They questioned failure by the Ugandan courts to arraign the suspects in court within 48 hours as it happened with the Uganda suspects.

This they said was discriminatory.

The government had earlier said it has evidence to be presented in the court of law an issue the muslim leaders doubt.
